Develop And Realise

Before I even began this project we spent 2-3 lessons as a class discussing what Extended Project was and what we had to do for it.
As soon as my teacher explained this, a variety of different creative thoughts came to mind. Some of the things I was thinking about were photo shoots, music videos, promotional videos- using my brother and his friends skateboarding/biking to produce a cool promotional video.

I liked the last idea best as my brother and his friends were into that sort of thing, but more importantly it was local for all of us!!
The more I thought about this project, the more it began to become unrealistic to me. The reasons for this being is that it would be hard to all meet as I obviously being a college student have free periods, whereas my brother and his friends would all have a full day at secondary school. It also got in the way of all of our other commitments such as work, family do's. I also found it hard having to rely on a bunch of thirteen year old boys who were constantly hyper and didn't take things as seriously as I would have liked. I didn't think they would be committed and focused and so that is why I did not want to go along and follow through with this idea.

This right here is the Henley skatepark - 5 minutes from the Henley college!

As I no longer knew what I was no going to do for my Extended project I thought it would be best to come up with something I have never done before.
I liked the idea of a promotional video as I enjoy the advertising aspect of things, but also because it is something I would like to pursue as a career.

My friends of friends parents work for the HYF and I knew this was a popular event that takes place every year in Henley.
A promotion video about the HYF seemed perfect. I looked online (research) and found out information about the event. I found out what events happen during this special occasion and more importantly that there was no official promotional video for the HYF!!

Unfortunately some events of the HYF fell on the due date of the EP - march time. This meant that I would not be able to film everything I would like. If I was to go through with this it would require me to do nothing but pre production for several weeks, and then an intense stressful tight schedule that included filming, editing re shooting and anything else that needed to be done. Not only would I not be able to complete this on time but I would have to try and find a way to work around other school projects which means I would have to postpone a lot of work.

However, I managed to film half of the video, and the other half 'archive footage' which I received via email of the owner.

I found filming extremely intense as I could not afford to have any bad footage that would go to waste. I only had one shot of filming so I had to be aware of what exactly was going on, otherwise I would have to use archive footage throughout the video. I did not want to do this as I wanted to be part of the project.

With only a few weeks left before we presented our final power point presentations to the class, I still hadn't finished editing. Software errors became a huge part in my development process.
A few days before our power point presentation my video would not play.
Several 'software error' messages would appear on screening not allowing me to access the software so I could edit. This was a big problem for me as there was matter of days before the final product was being shown to the class. I took a risk and decided to edit it all at home (using the same software).
I managed to finish it, just about, however I did have to block out all my other commitments and school subjects which I then had to catch up in my own time.

All the equipment used to film this video was provided by the Henley college.
This equipment included;
- Video camera

- USB memory card

- Tripod

This was all useful equipment especially as I would not have been able to get access to it anywhere else.

One thing I should have thought through more was the music chosen for my video.
I didn't realize until after I had made the video that I didn't use copyright free music. The song played in my video was produced by a well known iconic artist - Fat boy slim.
I give full and total credit for the music to him.

Premiere was the first professional software I have used. This software was challenging to use at first but it gradually became a lot easier as I started to pick techniques up by myself.

Use Resources

For part of my Creative Media Extended Project, I have been planning and brainstorming many ideas for several weeks. I decided to start my planning by thinking about things that interest me a lot. Immediately I thought of music and sports. I knew that I wanted my project to be either music or sports related!

My Ideas:

 - Music Video
My first idea was to produce a music video on a song already pre-recorded by my peers band.
I would need to take into consideration:
When I was going to film Where I was going to film What time Who with Props Cameras - Photography
I also thought about producing a small portfolio on someone playing a sport. For this I could have photographed my brother as he plays sports every week and has an interest in biking.
I would need to take into consideration:
Camera needed Time to shoot Weather conditions Where I would shoot My final Idea

For my final idea I have decided to produce a short ( 2/3 minute) Video on the Henley Youth Festival. Because the HYF doesn't start till after the due date, I have decided I will make a promotion video for it instead. I will get hold of the past years video footage and edit all of them myself to produce a promotion video. This is ideal as:
It's local I have the right software I can work around weather conditions I can film extra footage if needed I have the right camera RE:http://www.hyf.org.uk/home.aspx

Background on HYF;
The first Henley Youth Festival took place in 1994 and now well over 1,500 young people, from under 5’s to 20 year olds, take part each year in about 35 different events and activities.  The Festival itself takes place over a couple of weeks every March and many participants are busy preparing well in advance!

This The Henley Yoth Festival has been running for many years, and each year it gets more and more sucessful.
Many different schools local to Henley often participate in the HYF. Each year it gets more and more competitive and lots of students talents are revealed through the use of performing arts at the Kenton Theatre, the sporting events and many more.. These are some pictures from previous years. This is what you would expect to see in the HYF.

[Image]Performing arts takes part in the the local Kenton Theatre. Many children and teenagers compete to win for the main prize. It's a fun and excititng event that parents and guardians always enjoy to watch.  There are two of these competitions, one for the younger children from 4 - 12 yr olds. And the other from 13 - 20 yr olds. [Image]
The picture is the Stoner Run that takes place every year. It is aimed at primary school children and many people come along to watch. The Stoner run takes part in 'Stoner Park'. The children are catorgarised into age groups, which then compete against eachother. In total the children run one mile with the pace maker along side them. This event is very competitive.  [Image]The picture above is another perfroming arts photograph.

The photograph above shows the musical side of the Henley Youth Festival. Each primary school in Henley recieves a visit from local musicians who briefly teach them and talk to them about what they do. However children who already play instruments are at an advantage, but anyone ca participate, it's a lot of fun to be involved in.

Manage

Artefact A01- Manage. What I aim for.

The proposed outcome is identified and developed with limited guidance, support and assistance from the tutor-assessor but then finalised and refined independently by the learner individually or within groups. The proposed outcome is well defined and clearly focussed.

The project plan is clear and concise, with clear and detailed objectives and rationale. All of the main tasks to be completed are provided in an appropriate order and described in detail, with an appropriate time span allocated for each task.

The learner shows a high level of organisational ability and time management skills when managing the project. The learner maintains clear and detailed records of activities undertaken during the project, including problems encountered and steps taken to overcome them. Progress is monitored against the original plan and adjustments made to the plan where necessary.
(7-9 marks)

Activity log
The aim and purpose of designing an activity log was to help myself be more organized and cautious when planning my project. My activity log was constantly being updated and things to not turn out how I originally planned. But not only did I develop time management skills but I learnt to deal with problems during the process. Some of the unexpected problems encountered included the following;
Weather conditions (raining)
Throughout the length of the project I had to put up with the weather changes, therefore I had to postpone when I was going to film, because of this everything else I had planned ahead such as editing/ pre-production work had to be postponed also.
Software failure
Quite often my computer had ‘system errors’ and so my computer would restart and I completely lost everything. I had to re do most of my work in college and during my own time out of school. I also found it very difficult to edit on my laptop at home    and on the college computers. My laptop did not share the same software as the college computers so when editing at college I would have convert the video and change the format in order for it to work on the college computers.
Other commitments
When not filming/ editing at college I would have to plan ahead when I would be able to do it at home. I had to think about my other commitments like, work, family gatherings and sport events.
Nearer the time of each deadline I didn’t bother about doing every activity in order, I decided to do the most amounts of work first to get it done and out of the way, especially when I had free periods. This was the best time for me to get my work done.

Overall the main purpose of this activity log did come in handy as it allowed me to plan ahead in detail, although I did alter it often, I dealt with the consequences and improved my work in my free time.  Any absence lessons I would have to ask my peers / teachers what I had missed out and would then have to do the work.
My activity log definitely did not turn out how I originally thought it would but It was still very successful in the way of being organized.

Timescale
This is my brief timescale for each single activity that took place during the process of making my extended project video.  Each activity varied in duration but by planning how long I was going to spend on each activity gave me a great insight when planning in the future.
I’ve learnt that some things don’t go as expected for example, working around weather conditions.

 The Proposal

Title or working title of project (in the form of a question)

What will make you want to participate in the Henley Youth Festival 2012?

A Promotional video to encourage all people at any age to join in with the Henley youth festival that encounters every year.

Project objectives (eg, what is the question you want to answer? What do you want to learn how to do? What do you want to find out?):

What will make you want to participate in the Henley Youth Festival 2012?

I would like to find out why people participate in the Henley Youth festival every year?

Why people don’t? Is it advertised enough?

I would like people who have never even heard of the Henley Youth Festival to feel and be aware that this fun event occurs every year and has been for several years. It’s successful and people at any age can join.

If it is a group project, what will your responsibilities be?

It is not a group project therefore all my work will be done independently.
My roles and responsibilities will include;
Keeping track of time (time management skills)
Location ( where and what I will be filming)
Props (if needed. I will need to provide them)
Equipment (camera )
I will be responsible for the outcome of this project so I will need to take into consideration all the main aspects of how I plan to get it all done.

Section Two: Reasons for choosing this project
Reasons for choosing the project (eg, links to other subjects you are studying, personal interest, future plans, knowledge/skills you want to improve, why the topic is important):

My reasons for choosing this project are
1)     It’s local, as I live in Henley. So travelling would not be a problem.
2)      I could work around weather changes
3)     If any footage needed to be re shot I could do it within a couple of days
4)     I’m currently studying Btec creative media diploma

Not only do I think this project seems a lot of fun, it is also something I think I would like to persue as a career. I have a personal interest in advertising, through TV, and posters. (commercials, magazine posters). The idea of a promotional video fitted in well because I knew that this was something i’m passionate about.

The topic is important because it’s spreading the news of the Henley Youth Festival.
If this video is a success it could be shown to many people to promote and advertise the event, then maybe some people may actually consider taking part within the years.

I would like to improve on my time management skills, and video editing techniques.

Section Three: Activities and timescales

Activities to be carried out during the project (eg, research, analysis, writing, preparing for the presentation, etc):

Research
-       Previous events, results, activities

-       Timetable to balance out the making of the video and the power point presentation preparation
-

How long this will take:

4 – 6 lessons ( in college only)

Several months
May be altered and updated frequently

Milestone one:

Target date (set by tutor-assessor):

Milestone two:

Target date (set by tutor-assessor):

Section Four: Resources

What resources will you need for your research, write up and presentation (eg, libraries, books, journals, equipment):

I will need to go into depth of research via internet.
What activities take place at the Henley Youth Festival
Archive footage from YouTube

What your areas of research will cover?

What happens during the Henley youth festival

Who takes part?

Why do they take part?

Upcoming stars

Local friendly event
